I’m a super structured person… sometimes to a fault. If I don’t have some sort of plan, I tend to be way less productive overall. As a result, I’ve decided to start planning out my week based around a theme. Each day I’ll do about 2-4 different mini activities all based on that week’s theme. This easy young toddler rain cloud craft is part of my first fully planned out week! Our first theme is weather.
I decided to share the love and offer our full week’s worth of activities in my newsletter for subscribers. If you would like access to this entire theme and all future toddler themes, be sure to > subscribe here < so you don’t miss out. I’ll also be providing access to all past themes in case you missed any. Sweet!
Easy Young Toddler Rain Cloud Craft
This rain cloud craft is easiest enough for even the youngest toddler. All you need is:
- Two shades of non-toxic blue paint (I used a Crayola set)
- Piece of card stock or construction paper
- Cotton balls
- 2 paper towels
- Rubber band or hair tie
- Glue or gluestick
How to Make the Rain Drops
I secured our paper onto a corkboard with pins so it wouldn’t slide around. This is not necessary, but I did find it helpful! Start by folding a paper towel in half and then in half again. Wrap it over a jumbo crayon and then secure with a rubber band or hair tie. Repeat this with one more crayon if you are using two shades of blue paint.
Put a little bit of paint onto a paper plate and demonstrate how to dip the paint dauber into the paint and onto the paper. You may choose to dip the paint for your little one to make it a bit easier. As your child dots the paper, be sure to let them know that they are making rain drops! We set our picture out in the sun to dry. Make sure the paint is fully dry before you move onto the rain cloud.
How to Make the Rain Cloud
We used an Elmer’s glue stick but normal glue would work too. Cover your rain drop art with glue on the spot where you want the cloud to go. I stretched out our cotton balls a bit beforehand so that it would look more fluffy. Let your little one press the cotton balls down onto the glue.
That is it! The end result is adorable and it makes the perfect artwork display for the week’s weather theme!
I’d love to hear from you! Have you used paint with your young toddler yet? If so, how did you let your little one play with it?
